WiMAX TV System

WiMAX TV broadcast/multicast architecture

UDcast’s WiMAX TV architecture is based on the Multicast-Broadcast Services specification, which is part of the 802.16e standard. Multicast and Broadcast Service (MBS) supported by Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) leverages on the successful features of popular technologies as DVB-H, DVB-SH, MediaFLO and 3GPP E-UTRA. The UDcast solution is fully IP-based, enabling the use of standard network and head-end components, as well as the existing terminal applications. The architecture is scalable over a practically unlimited number of users, flexible in content trafficking, and centrally managed and monitored.

WiMAX TV System Components

The UDcast WiMAX TV solution consists of three main software modules which are designed for integration into existing WiMAX network equipment:

WiMAX TV Manager

  • The WiMAX TV manager ensures the management of the entire WiMAX TV network, as well as the integration of the broadcast/multicast system with content sources, service protection and interactive services. The WiMAX TV manager is a multi-technology system enabling the managed hand-over between WiMAX and other delivery methods eg. unicast, DVB-H, DTH etc.
  • The WiMAX TV manager is part of the CSN (Connectivity Services Netowrk) located at Application Service Provider site (ASP). It interacts with the Access Service Network (ASN) Gateways through the R3 interface implemented over the IP backbone network.

WiMAX TV ASN / MBS Module

  • The ASN/MBS (Mobile Base Station) Module implements the core functions of the WiMAX Multicast-Broadcast Service Controller. It also ensures the correct level of synchronization of the base stations for SFN (Single Frequency Network) operation, plus Inter-bursts Forward Error Correction (iFEC), intra-BS hand-over and content time-slicing.
  • The ASN/BMS (Base Station Module) Module runs as a part of standard Access Service Network Gateway (ASN GW) equipment and controls associated base stations via the R6 interface within the Access Network.

WiMAX TV Base Station Module

  • The WiMAX TV BS Module enforces SFN broadcasting and time-slicing. Additionally, it executes the procedures for local content adaptation or content injection, enabling geographically addressable content distribution.
  • The WiMAX TV BS Module is located within the WiMAX Base Station entities
