UDcast and Philippines Multi-media System, Inc. (PMSI) announced that the tests of broadcast mobile TV services in the Philippines using the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld) standard have been successful and the service will be commercially launched in 2007.
The commercial service will initially launch in Manila and extend to other major cities. "There are currently more than 42 million mobile phone subscribers in the Philippines, and consumer research confirms the appeal for Mobile TV service today, with a further strong growth potential in the future," said Mr. Cesar G. Reyes, CEO for PMSI. He adds, "UDcast provided PMSI with IP encapsulators that are powerful, flexible and stable. They have allowed us to implement various options that are critical to our future plans."
This first commercial implementation of mobile TV in the Philippines features the DVB-H standard, for which UDcast has pioneered compatible network equipment. DVB-H is already dominant in Europe, but still competes in Asia with several other rival technologies. "The choice of DVB-H for the first commercial mobile TV deployment in the Philippines shows that this technology is capable of offering high-quality mass broadcasting for mobile devices," said Dr. Jas Saini, CEO of UDcast, "As a pioneer in DVB-H network architecture, UDcast is thrilled to be a part of this commercial deployment, demonstrating that the UDcast solution is integrated perfectly with all major telecommunications and broadcasting vendors."
"The mobile TV market in the Philippines is heating up with several trials ongoing and a strong potential subscriber base," said Arlene Buela of Communications Solutions (CSI), UDcast's incountry system integration partner. "Working with UDcast's proven DVB-H standard network equipment based on satellite, we have been able to create a network with the quality and cost savings that will appeal to subscribers, providing the revenue streams that PMSI needs to succeed in Mobile TV."
RRD - the leading integrator of the first worldwide DVB-H Service for 3 Italia, has selected UDcast as IP-Encapsulator preferred supplier for its DVB-H head-end. RRD, which provides integrated platform solutions and operational services for DVB-H, is continuously scouting the market to find the best of breed technology to be integrated in its state of the art platform.
RRD provides extended support service to 3 Italia and hosts, operates and maintains DVB-H service. In addition RRD provided the design, planning and deployment of the nationwide DVB-H network with coverage for 40 million people in Italy or 75% of the Italian population. According to 3 Italia latest announcements, more than 700 thousands customers throughout Italy are using Mobile TV, powered by the RRD service, since one year from its launch.
"RRD is committed to creating an integrated network that produces the best Mobile TV experience for users and operators," said Alfeo Pareschi, Business Development Director, RRD. "With increased users and terminal usage of Mobile TV, we needed to support a large selection of terminals from different vendors and be ready to scale the network to a large number of transmitter sites. UDcast was the only vendor that could scale to our network needs."
Datamonitor predicts that more than 69 million people worldwide will subscribe to mobile television services by 2009, generating total revenue of $5.5 billion.
RRD and UDcast will be broadcasting DVB-H television live to all the visitors of IBC in Amsterdam on channel 28.
UDcast and Zentek provided the DVB-H solution to TV2Go, operated by PGK Media in Singapore.
PGK Media announced a digital mobile TV broadcasting trial "TV2Go" in Singapore, where Zentek, an integrated solutions provider for digital TV was appointed as main system integrator and UDcast supplied the DVB-H network equipment.
UDcast announced a strategic cooperation with Zentek, in providing the Japanese and Far East Asia markets with the world leading international mobile TV standard - DVB-H. Under the terms of the non-exclusive cooperation, Zentek will act as the reseller and integrator of UDcast's DVB-H mobile TV products in these markets to bring the tools for Japanese manufacturers and Asian broadcasters enabling delivery of competitive products and services for this global standard. In Japan, the equipment provided by UDcast and Zentek will enable manufacturers to develop and produce mobile phones, notebooks, chipsets, in-car TV receivers and other devices compatible with DVB-H technology.
UDcast's equipment is already deployed in two commercial Mobile TV networks (Vietnam and Philippines) and over 10 trials in the Far East Asia region.
For the first time UDcast will demonstrate the solution enabling local content in the standard DVB-T digital television. The solution is compliant with standard definition and high definition TV, and it ensures cost-efficient distribution of local channels and advertising spots over satellite and IP networks.
UDcast will demonstrate the live Mobile TV broadcasting with its complete DVB-H system. The presented solution will feature the world's most deployed IP Encapsulators (including the innovating embedded MIP insertion feature), Network Management, Flexible Distribution based on the iSplicer technology and Network Monitoring equipment.
At IBC in the Mobile Zone, UDcast will showcase their data compression technology which allows additional acceleration of the data transfer by a factor of more than 10x. The advanced compression technology will shown for the first time in dedicated satellite equipment of UDcast, as well as used for acceleration of terrestrial WAN (wide area networks) in cooperation with leading network equipment providers.
UDcast's new version of UDgateway is the first Satellite-dedicated acceleration appliance providing an embedded Antivirus scanner function, protecting data and networks from dangerous virus attacks. This is the first satellite device enabling acceleration of the very chatty Windows file sharing protocol (CIFS). UDgateway improves CIFS performance by up to 5 times.
