UDcast has announced its predictions and views on the Mobile TV and Satellite IP Broadband industries for the coming year.
"As analyst estimates range from 107 million users by 2010 (Northern Sky Research) to 540 million users by 2011 (ABI Research), the next few years will bring exceptional growth and development in the Mobile TV industry," said Filip Gluszak, vice president of marketing, UDcast.
1. A number of new broadcast Mobile TV networks will launch.Following the first successful deployments of commercial Mobile TV services in Italy, Finland, UK, Korea and Japan, UDcast says, we expect at least 10 countries to provide commercial DVB-H based mobile TV services by the end of 2007.
2. DVB-H will be the dominant global Mobile TV technology.Reports from Informa Telecoms and Media estimate that DVB-H will reach significant levels worldwide by 2008, covering almost 60 percent of all broadcast mobile TV users by 2011.
3. Mobile TV distribution will become an important application for satellite data services.Mobile TV operators will largely use satellites to distribute DVB-H signals across large networks.
4. Satellite service providers are joining the Mobile TV market.Satellite service providers are already trialling DVB-H head-ends and flexible satellite distribution, while the DVB Forum pursues standardisation of DVB-SH (Satellite Services for Handhelds).
5. Mobile TV will open a flow of new advertising revenues for mobile operators and broadcasters. The advertising opportunities will be linked to addressable TV commercials, interactive graphical content, zoom-in advertising and new hybrid solutions linking messaging, wireless Web and Mobile TV.
The satellite market will see stable growth in 2007, particularly in emerging economies and for business continuity, disaster recovery and military applications, according to UDcast, a worldwide provider of solutions enabling full IP over broadcast media.
1. Market GrowthThe satellite IP communications market is relatively mature, presenting a stable growth of about 10 to 20 percent per year. The emerging economies will remain the fastest growing markets for satellite data in 2007, including Latin America, Africa & Middle East and certain regions of Asia.
2. ApplicationsThe fastest growing IP applications are: Business Continuity, enabling back-up links for corporate WANs, Disaster Recovery solutions, such as FEMA’s projects in the U.S., and the Military applications.
There is visible progress in the deployment of consumer VSAT systems, driven by companies such as IPStar in Asia-Pacific and WildBlue in the U.S.
Entertainment remains a key driver for satellite capacity, especially with the new hybrid mobile TV solutions, as the DVB-SH, standard initiated by Alcatel, together with UDcast and number of partners, and the demand for distribution of digital television (back-haul networks).
3. TechnologyThe two major trends in 2007 are the increasing adaptation of DVB-S2 standard among service providers and equipment vendors, and the growing penetration of the advanced Satellite IP acceleration and VPN solutions, that are becoming a must requirement of the highly demanding corporate and governmental satellite users.
This new white paper should be of high interest for all Mobile TV and Satellite industry decision makers. It provides a short background on the Mobile TV and DVB-H evolution, and then an overview of various Mobile TV network architectures, including the Satellite-based distribution. It evaluates the impact of the geographically addressable content on the system, and compares the costs of various solutions, with objective to guide the industry towards the most optimum choices.
