It was an exiting year for both the Mobile TV and Satellite industries: the success of the first commercial DVB-H deployments confirms the strategic importance of Mobile TV for cellular operators and TV broadcasters. At the same time the satellite broadband market continues to demonstrate its importance to both SME and large enterprise customers, in particular with business continuity and disaster recovery applications.
UDcast participated in a number of large satellite deployments, including a nationwide banking system with Algerie Telecom (about 1500 sites equipped), an ambitious digital divide project with JSAT in Japan, and mobile disaster recovery solution for the Federal Emergecy Management Agency in USA (see Customer Story in this issue). We were successful in numerous opportunities in DVB-H Mobile TV ensuring a 70% global market share, announcing this year new partnerships with Motorola and Alcatel and other industry leaders. Major broadcasters as Abertis Telecom in Spain and Globecast in France have started qualification of satellite DVB-H distribution with iSplicer, and many network operators decided to take benefits of the new network monitoring solutions, the GOLDENEAGLE and Navigator DVB-H analyzers (see our latest DVB-H Navigators in this issue).
We would like to thank you all for the attention and trust you have accorded to us so far, and wish you a lot of professional and personal success in 2007!
Your UDcast Team.
It could not be easier to perform mobile measurement efforts for DVB-H/T networks, than with the newly launched DVB-H Navigator from UDcast. This handheld equipment can be used either when moving in a vehicle at normal speed or by a pedestrian (indoor or outdoor). The measurement effort can be dedicated to a single channel (frequency) or for multiple channels at the same time. Both mobile TV broadcasters and network operators can easily take advantage of the benefits of the advanced features of the DVB-H Navigator.
The DVB-H Navigator is compatible with all DVB-H broadcasting systems and provides real-time, centralized control of broadcasting signal quality featuring multi-layer protocol analysis (RF, DVB-T, DVB-H, and IP) enabling operators to ensure maximum network uptime, improve user satisfaction and reduce operating costs.
In most cases during natural and manmade disasters, satellite communications is the only solution that enables the operations of a quick response communications infrastructure. To ensure the performance and security of mission critical communications services in extreme situations, leading satellite system suppliers UDcast, On Call Communications and Intelsat are providing the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with high performance disaster recovery communications systems.
To meet FEMA's needs for satellite communications and video capability, On Call has provided them with 70 OnSPOT units including telephone, fax and data capabilities for their Mobile Disaster Recovery Centers and Mobile Emergency Response Units. An additional 25 units are being deployed for the Regional offices and FIRST response teams.
"OnSPOT systems provide reliable communications services that let emergency personnel concentrate on taking care of the people while we take care of the communications. In the most critical moments of a natural disaster or national emergency, FEMA has to know that it can depend on the smooth operation of emergency response communications networks," says James Gilbert, CEO, On Call Communications. "Using UDcast's UDgateway® we are able to meet FEMA's needs with a powerful and flexible tool that manages and controls the network, providing a high level of security without sacrificing quality or performance."
At the same time "Intelsat's support of the QuickSpot service is another example of how deploying our powerful satellite resources and teleport facilities meets the unique demands of the first responder and disaster recovery markets," according to Alex Flores, Intelsat's senior product manager.
The efficient management of standard communication protocols over satellite links, providing the level of performance and security required by FEMA, is ensured by UDcast's UDgateway. This solution helps to manage recovery missions, saving lives of persons in danger and accelerating the reconstruction process in the damaged areas.
UDcast announces that in addition to its sales locations in Sophia-Antipolis, Paris, Milan, Budapest, Alger and Seul, it has opened a US office. The office is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it will serve the growing demand for UDcast technologies in the North American market.
Paul Anderson, Director of Sales, Americas, will head up the UDcast US activities. Anderson brings 12 years of sales experience in the broadcast and satellite fields. Previously, Anderson was the international sales director at Axcera and has held international sales positions at Echostar.
